The Turtle

In April 2007 John and Terry Blake celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. John requested a Speech by Toad. We were honored to comply, and long association inspired us to call our presentation,

"The Turtle"

Once upon a morning merry, while I pondered
Bright and cheery
Over many a quaint and curious volume of for-
Gotten lore -
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there
Came a tapping
As of someone gently rapping, rapping at my
Chamber door.

Open then I flung the shutter, when with many
A flirt and flutter
In there tripped a lissome maiden, swirling 'round the
Shift she wore.
Then methought the air grew denser, perfumed
From an unseen censer
Swung by seraphim, whose footfalls tinkled on
The tufted floor.

And that maiden, never flitting, still is sitting,
Still is sitting,
By my knee upon the settee, safe inside
My chamber door;
And her eyes have all the seeming of an angel
That is dreaming,
And my heart to that sweet vision of her loving
Face before,

Now is joined - forever more!

With thanks to Edgar Allan Poe.
